National Board Prerequisites

CMI Prerequisites (미국의료통역사 국시 시험 선수조건)
(If you arean interpreter for Russian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean or Vietnameseplease see the note at the bottom of this page*.)

1) Age: 18세 이상이면 응시 가능합니다.
The minimum age required of an individual to apply for certification will beequivalent to the age of majority as defined by the federal government, whichis 18 years of age. A driver’s license or a birth certificate or passport copyare acceptable proofs of age.

2) General Education: 최소 학력 조건만을 언급했습니다.
Minimum education: High School Diploma. A High School or GED diploma areacceptable proofs of general education.

3) Medical Interpreter Education: 교육이수관련 사항입니다. 최소 40시간입니다. 하지만 40시간 듣고 볼 시험이 아닙니다. 미국에서는의사 분들도  많이 응시하는 시험이기도합니다.  
Successful completion of a medical interpreter educational program (onlygraduation from programs of a minimum 40 hours duration will be accepted). Aregistry of training programs is posted on the IMIA web site at: http://www.imiaweb.org/education/trainingnotices.asp. A Certificate of Completionof such a program is the only acceptable proof of medical interpretereducation.

4) Oral proficiency in English: 영어능력시험제출 자료입니다.
One of the following:

• Bachelor, Masters, PhD, or any other degree from any US institution of higher education.
• Graduation from any High School from an English language country or from an American School abroad.
• One of the following tests (subject to change):
• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): 570+ on paper; 230+ on computer version; 90+ on iBT.
• ELPT (English Language Proficiency Test): 950+
• MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) 80+
• ECPE (Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English): PASS
• FCE (First Certificate in English, Level 3): A
• CAE (Certificate in Advanced English, Level 4): B
• CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English, Level 5): B
• IELTS (International English Language Testing System) 7.0
• 토익 (리딩 & 리스닝): 730 이상

* 토익시험 점수(800이상)도 영어시험에 포함됩니다. 한국 응시생들께서는 영어점수로 토익점수를 제출 하실 수 있습니다. 또한 한국에서영어-한국어 통번역 대학원을 졸업하신 분들은 “영어시험 제출 면제” 확답을 받았습니다. 미국의료통역사 국시 시험 관계자 분들과 여러 차례미팅을한 후 얻어낸 결과입니다.

5) Oral proficiency in the target language: 한국어 능력을 의미합니다.
One of the following:

• Bachelor, Masters, PhD, or any other degree from an institution of higher education where the target language is spoken
• Graduation from a high school of the country where the target language is spoken
• 24+ semester college credit hours of the target language
• ACTFL Oral Exams (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages): Advanced Mid Level (follow this link www.languagetesting.com) - both the OPI (telephonic) and OPIc (computer recording) are acceptable.

Earning the CMI Credential

To be granted a CMI credential individuals must meetall of the eligibility prerequisites and pass BOTH the written and oralexaminations. The CMI credential is awarded in the specific languages for whichthe oral exam is passed (for example CMI-Spanish, or CMI-Korean).

“CMI-Korean”이라는 의미는 “미국의료통역사 국시”의 원천언어는 영어입니다 (미국의 모국어는 영어). 그러므로 영어가 원천언어, 즉 모국어가되고 한국어가 목표언어, 즉 제2외국어가 됩니다. 그러므로 응시생 분께서 미국의료통역사 국시에 합격하시면 미국 관점에서 영어를 모국어로 보고 제 2외국어인 한국어를 외국어로 간주하기 때문에, CMI-Korean라는 영어->한국어 의료통역사 타이틀이 부여됩니다. 여러분의 영어는 이미 미국 원어민 수준이어야 한다는 뜻이기도 합니다.  

The National Board only awards the CMI credential toindividuals who meet the eligibility criteria and successfully complete the writtenand oral examinations.

*Russian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean and Vietnamese interpreters

FOR those interpreters who want to be certifiedin Russian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean or Vietnamese ONLY, (thisno longer applies to Spanish as the three years have passed) please note:

Interpreters who have been working as medicalinterpreters for at least one year (recent experience within the lasttwo years), and can provide proof with a signed letter of employment on companyletterhead, with a hire date, are eligible to take the CMI writtenexam and the oral exam for Russian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean and Vietnamese.Oral exams in other languages will be added and candidates will have this sameopportunity, with an ending date three years after the oral exam in theirlanguage becomes available. 

위의 사항은 많이 신경 쓰지 않으셔도 됩니다. 의료통역 실전경험이 없으신 분들은 의료통역교육 이수증 받으시고 영어성적 제출하시면 필기시험에 응시할 자격이 부여되고 필기시험에 합격하면 구술시험 응시 자격이부여된다는 것입니다.

Candidates must ensure that their supervisors (HR ordirect) include the language interpreted and the dates of employment.Multiple letters of employment are accepted, and the employment can be as anindependent contractor, volunteer status, or regular part-time or full-timeemployee.

(Note: Other languages will have the three years fromthe time their exam became available to supply the letter described above.)
